Sun, Rain...Lots of Rain, Sun 05/11/2012
It's been a wild weather week. Not so bad because it forced us to really start gearing up for our end of the year show. This week, we learned the words to a Willy Wonka Medley. Maybe you've heard your children coming home singing Oompa Loompa, Doopedy Doo. I even find myself singing it at the most random times. Working on this performance will be taking up most of our time over the next couple of weeks. It's a challenging process for everyone involved, but the payoff will be incredible. Miss Brittany and Mr. John started working with the children on making props. Mr. Bill has been hoarding all types of cardboard for us and yesterday we cut and primed all the pieces. Miss Kristen is using her very strong talents as a dancer and cheerleader to teach the mini Wonka -ers some moves to bust out on stage. See the pictures below of the first graders enjoying some time off from their hard work in the classroom. We were treated with some nice weather on Thursday so we spent a little extra time outside. Add Comment First grade has been busy with the month of April learning about different types of stories. We did lots of fun projects from castle building for fairy tales week to fruit faces just for fun! This week we will be working with sharks and fish as we start our under the sea month of May. A quick reminder that our End of the Year show is going to be May 31st at Thayer Academy this year. For our show we will be needing props and as a fundraiser for that Mr. John has created a large photo album with pictures of your children. The pictures are for sale $1.00 each picture or $5.00 for all the pictures of your child. Thanks for stopping by! March Flew!!! 04/03/2012
Howdy folks, long time no talk. Things have been incredibly busy, so much so we took a break from our blog. During the month of March our children learned about paleontology, geology, and biology. Our future dinosaur bone diggers created their own fossils with Miss Brittany and Mr. John. Mr. John's experiment got a little messy, while Miss Brittany kept the kids fairly clean. Aspiring geologists built houses out of toothpicks and marshmellows and tested their structural strength in a simulated earthquake over Rice Krispy Treat bedrock and jell-o sediment. We discussed where it would be best to build no matter how strong the buildings we constructed were. We are continuing our biology project as we observe the sunflower, squash, green beans, and pumpkin seeds we planted. As of right now, most of our seeds have popped through the soil and the children our documenting the progress in journals. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 03/06/2012
This week our theme is Meteorology and since it is kitchen Tuesday we are going to be making spaghetti and meatballs and reading "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs". The first graders will learn about precipitation and what this means in the meteorology world. This week we will also be starting the "Naked Egg Experiment". With this experiment the kids will learn the science terms; acid, base, osmosis, and many more. We will be putting eggs into a container of vinegar weakens the shell of an egg and actually turns the egg to a rubbery consistency where you can bounce it on the table. After this we will be using osmosis to turn the egg a different color. Stay tuned to find out what happens!!! Last week we focused on our last week of Art and we worked with different types of "media" we used paper, cardboard, paint, magazines, and many other materials to create collages about ourselves. You can find them hanging up all over the room. We would also like to give a quick thank you to Ella V. and her family for donating prizes to our classroom!!! There has been a technical difficulty with pictures... New pictures will be taken and put o Hello everyone! I hope you are all enjoying this unseasonably warm and amazing February break. We are currently on the look out for some gently used books to extend our first grade library. As the year progresses so do the students reading abilities and their hunger for new books to get their little paws on. I first wanted to send a special Thank You to James F. and family for the book donation! James is summer and holiday B.A.S.Er and when he heard yesterday we were looking for book donations he came in today with five gently used books for our first grade library! Thanks James. We are also starting a new system in our room that is going to involve a few stuffed animals. If you have any stuffed animals at home that you would like to donate to our classroom just throw them in the wash and send them in! Thank you in advance! We are excited in March to start our science themed month with lots of awesome and explosive science experiments and projects! Even though the weather is warming up we still ask that you send your children to school with coats and appropriate winter clothes. In the afternoon when we go outside it tends to be chilly and windy out on the playground. Stay tuned for more updates! Happy Valentines Day! 02/14/2012
Thank you to all that donated things for our super awesome yogurt party today! Last week out theme was 2D dry and wet art. Ms. Brittany made paper with the first graders. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the messy fun project. Each child was able to bring home their very own home made piecer of paper! We also focused alot on Valentines crafts in preparation for this weeks holiday. This week we are focusing on 3D art. We are excited to explore different mediums and see what all of the first graders can create with their own hands. Stay tuned for some really awesome art projects!! Super Bowl here we come!!! 02/03/2012
This week our focus was sight.... but the first graders were excited because this weekend is Super Bowl Sunday so we diverted a little and had ourselves a mini healthy super bowl party. On Wednesday we made Super Bowl Sunday Brady Veggie Cups. The students were able to cut up the veggies and enjoy a ranch dip made with 0% plain greek yogurt. It was lots of fun and nutritious! Thursday we started our new clubs. Ms. Brittany is teaching Clay Club. Students are able to learn different types of clay hand building techniques and create awesome works of art that they can bring home. Ms. Kristen is the head of the yummy cooking club again. Each week the cooking club will whip up some delicious healthy treats. Mr. John is the Coach for gym club. The kids are working on their fitness each week doing a new fun activity. Ms. Nicky is head of the awesome comic making club. Mr. Sam is the head of music club. I have to say I wish that I was able to be in Mr. Sam's music club because the students are learning how to play guitar! And Ms. Lauren is the head builder in Lego club! Next week we are starting our monthly theme of Art. Stay tuned for some great artwork coming home from your little Picassos. I am The Lorax and I speak for the trees! 01/30/2012
Today we had a very special guest. Mr. John was able to bring his friend The Lorax to B.A.S.E. All the students were very excited! Here are some pictures to enjoy! First Grade has SPIRIT! 01/30/2012
The first graders are all a buzz about this upcoming weekends big game. We decided to show our excitement and our Patriots home team pride by creating a few awesome pats crafts. The first graders did a fantastic job creating their own patriots jerseys and posters. On another note today the first grade is having a surprise guest appearance! Be sure to ask your child about their exciting Monday at B.A.S.E! Smells like fun! 01/25/2012
This past week our theme was our sense of smell. The first graders got to participate in some really fun activities. Ms. Brittany lead an activity where the students were able to make their very own ice cream. She introduced science and smell into this lesson and this kids really enjoyed being able to see their very own ice cream in the making. Ms. Kristen did a great activity where the students had to do a blind sniff test. The kids had to use their noses to see if they could figure out what was in the secret containers. Mr. John had the kids making paper towel tube penguins for our bulletin board. The kids had fun creating their penguins and adorning them with hockey gear and jerseys. This week we are working with our sense of hearing. Ms. Kristen set up a sensory sound table where the students were able to play with different items and describe the different sounds that the items made. Lots of exciting new projects to come! |
