Today we had a very special guest. Mr. John was able to bring his friend The Lorax to B.A.S.E. All the students were very excited! Here are some pictures to enjoy! Add Comment First Grade has SPIRIT! 01/30/2012
The first graders are all a buzz about this upcoming weekends big game. We decided to show our excitement and our Patriots home team pride by creating a few awesome pats crafts. The first graders did a fantastic job creating their own patriots jerseys and posters. On another note today the first grade is having a surprise guest appearance! Be sure to ask your child about their exciting Monday at B.A.S.E! Smells like fun! 01/25/2012
This past week our theme was our sense of smell. The first graders got to participate in some really fun activities. Ms. Brittany lead an activity where the students were able to make their very own ice cream. She introduced science and smell into this lesson and this kids really enjoyed being able to see their very own ice cream in the making. Ms. Kristen did a great activity where the students had to do a blind sniff test. The kids had to use their noses to see if they could figure out what was in the secret containers. Mr. John had the kids making paper towel tube penguins for our bulletin board. The kids had fun creating their penguins and adorning them with hockey gear and jerseys. This week we are working with our sense of hearing. Ms. Kristen set up a sensory sound table where the students were able to play with different items and describe the different sounds that the items made. Lots of exciting new projects to come! Sorry for the mini Hiatus 01/16/2012
Welcome back first graders and parents!!! We are very sorry for our mini Hiatus during the crazy holiday festivities. This months theme in "5 Senses". So far your children have explored taste and touch. With touch we had the children create 2010 posters using different textured materials. These are on display on the bulletin board right outside of the classroom. We also had students blindly but their hands into a box and feel an object that they did not know what it was. They then had to describe what they were feeling to the rest of the class. The object was from these descriptive words the other students could guess what was in the box. The kids had alot of fun with this one. With taste Mr. John did a drink taste test. The students had to use their sense of taste to tell Mr. John which drink they believed they were drinking. This project caused alot of excitement. Ms. Kristen held a blind taste testing experiment. The children were blind folded and were dared to taste anything from a marshmallow to cinnamon. Ms. Meri and Ms. Alysa even made a guest appearance. We also had some brave parents (Issabella D, and Paige's Mom) try it out! Ms. Brittany did a science experiment involving the brake down of starch into surgars using saltine crackers. During this experiment the kids also learned about Pavlov's Dog Experiment! Sorry for the long break! Updates will now be weekly including picture Winter Fun 12/12/2011
December is flying by and with the holidays right around the corner first grade will be doing lots of fun and exciting winter crafts and creating gifts for their loved ones. In the passing weeks Mr. John, Ms. Kristen, and Ms. Brittany have been teaching some interesting lessons on winter animals and foods. Mr. John made Icelandic cocoa soup. The kids were able to see how hot chocolate is made and what happens when you burn chocolate....whoopsies.... Ms. Brittany did an experiment with the kids where they made frost using a tin can, salt, water, and ice. Ms. Kristen made snowglobes and snowmen with the kids. The snowglobes came out great! In each globe the children drew what they wanted and then wrote a story explaining what was going on in the picture. ! Lots of fun things to come in the next two weeks.... Friendly Reminder. 11/28/2011
We hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving weekend! Just a quick reminder that even though it has been unseasonably warm recently your child needs to come to B.A.S.E. with a warm winter coat. They will not be able to participate in outside activities without one. Also as it gets colder hats and gloves/mittens are also recommended. It gets very cold on the playground. Thank You! Our theme this week is Europe and Asia so today we will be visiting the rolling hills of Tuscany and learning about Italian So much fun on Club Thursdays! 11/04/2011
Yesterday we started our six week long Club program. Your child had so many exciting clubs to choose from. We have Music with Mr. Sam, Art with Ms. Nicky. Cooking with Ms. Kristen, Chinese with Ms. Stephanie, and Science with Ms. Brittany. Clubs are exciting for everyone including the teachers. In science club Roy a third grader was teaching the younger kids new and challenging science vocabulary. It was awesome to see the different grades come together and work as a team. In cooking club Ms. Kristen made some delicious apple crisp that she even shared with the kindergarten class. Every Thursday each club will be doing something new and exciting. Ask your child about it and I am sure they will have some fun things to show/tell you. Special Thank You 11/02/2011
